Seat Belt Law Update
California Seat Belt Law Update
January 1st 2027
California Assembly Bill 435
All children ages 8-15 must sit in a booster seat unless they pass the 5-Step Seat Belt Test. This update to the seat belt law aims to enhance the safety of young passengers by ensuring that seat belts fit properly across their bodies.
The 5-Step Seat Belt Test includes:
The child can sit all the way back against the vehicle seat.
Their knees bend comfortably at the edge of the seat without slouching.
The seat belt crosses the shoulder between the neck and arm.
The lap belt lies snugly across the upper thighs, not the stomach.
The child can remain seated like this for the entire trip.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to regularly check the fit of the seat belt as children grow. This initiative reflects California's commitment to reducing injuries and fatalities on the road, emphasizing the importance of proper restraint systems for all passengers. Authorities will be conducting awareness campaigns to educate the public about these new requirements and the potential penalties for non-compliance. With these measures, California aims to set a standard for child passenger safety and encourage similar legislation in other states.
